Okoa Mombasa and the Institute for Social Accountability (TISA) will hold a press conference on Monday, 30th May 2022 at 10 am to discuss the recent judgment in our court case to obtain the Standard Gauge Railway contracts.
All media are invited to attend. The press conference will take place at 10 am at the offices of Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) in Nyali. It will also be broadcast live on Okoa Mombasa’s Facebook page.
On 13th May, the High Court in Mombasa ordered the government to release the SGR contracts in response to our court petition. The government has 21 days to respond, but has claimed in the media that they intend to file an appeal. Neither Okoa Mombasa nor TISA have been served with the appeal as of yet.
The KES 450 billion (USD 4.2 billion) SGR is the most expensive infrastructure project in Kenya’s history, and was financed mostly via loans through the Export-Import Bank of China. Despite the enormous cost, agreements related to the project’s financing have never been made public. President Uhuru Kenyatta promised to release the contracts in 2018, but has yet to do so.
Okoa Mombasa first filed an Access to Information request to obtain the contracts in 2019, but the government failed to provide a substantive reply. A court petition to force compliance was filed in June 2021. Background and case details can be viewed here.
